All this waste, we have to ban it, if we want to save our planet! St. Catherine's participates in the Green Schools project.This project is an international environmental education programme offering a well defined controllable way for schools to take environmental issues from the curriculum and apply them to the day to day running of the school. It is known internationally as Eco - Schools. It offers us opportunities to take environmental issues from the curriculum and apply them to the day to day running of our school. Green Schools is holistic. It aims to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of a school. Green Schools endeavours to extend learning beyond the classroom and develop responsible attitudes and commitment both at home and in the wider community. Green Schools is both a programme and an award scheme. The Green Flag award is now established as a well respected and recognised eco - label. Green Schools is a long - term programme. The flag can be flown outside the school or displayed in the foyer, however, it is important to remember that the programme is one of continual reduction of the school's environmental impact. Therefore the award needs renewal every 2 years. Our hopes for the Green Flag Project in St. Catherine's. It is hoped that we can significantly reduce the amount of rubbish generated within our school and sent to landfill. Along with reducing the waste created inside the school, it is hoped that the litter around the grounds of the school and in the vacinity of the school can be tackled and eliminated and so creating a nicer, cleaner, healthier environment for everyone to enjoy and thrive in. As there are no green areas and very few flowerbeds in and around the school it is envisaged that we establish more flowerbeds, where the children can plant shrubs, trees, flowers and some herbs and/ or vegetables. To enhance the school playgrounds both in front of and at the back of the school building it was suggested by the children that the dull, grey walls be painted and that some playground markings could be drawn for lunchtime activities. With funding from the Parent's Association, the Board of Management and also fundraising days, devised by the children themselves, it is our hope that we will be able to apply for our first Green Flag in December 2007, however, there is a lot of hard work to get through before then.
